With increasing transgene cost, c_g, a pair of complex eigenvalues emerge from the origin, move left, and eventually remerge on the x-axis of the complex plane. Thereafter, one of the (now real) eigenvalues moves right; the other, left. Small transgene cost is thus associated with large amplitude, slowly decaying oscillations that can be used to "slingshot" GM mosquitoes into natural populations.
